Polls

With polls you ask your audience questions they answer on their phones: no account and no app needed. A poll contains several questions, has a fixed link with a QR code and can be presented question by question. You do not need a competition for this; polls also work for workshops, talks and team meetings.

Switch on

Polls are off by default. To switch them on:

  1. Open the team settings
  2. In the Polls card, turn on Switch on polls

Polls then appears in your team's navigation. Owners, admins and editors can switch it.

When you create a new team, you choose right away what you will use it for: Competitions, Polls or Both. With Polls, polls are switched on and competitions appear greyed out in the navigation and the team overview. Switch on competitions brings them back with one click. In the team settings, Show competitions switches them off or on again.

Create a poll

Click Polls in the navigation, enter a title under New poll and click Create. You land on the page of the poll, where you can rename or delete it. Deleting also removes all questions and answers.

Build questions

Click New question. Each type is a card with one sentence, and next to it you see how the question looks on the screen:

TypeThe audienceOn the screen
Choicepicks one or more answers from your listbars with shares
Word cloudsends up to three short wordscloud, frequent words larger
Free textsends one to three short answerscards
Quiztaps an answer against the clockcorrect answer, distribution and the fastest
Scalegives a value, for example from 1 to 10average and distribution
Rankingputs answers in orderranking by average place

Change the order by dragging the handle on the left or with the arrows. Duplicate adds a copy right after it. When you move the mouse over a button with an icon, a tooltip names the action, and for a locked button also the reason. You copy questions from another poll or competition of your team with Copy at the bottom of the page, ready to start and without results. Questions that have been played can no longer be edited.

Each poll has a fixed link, for example slam-voting.com/u/K7Q3P, and a QR code. Both stay the same, so you can put them into slides or invitations in advance. On the page of the poll you copy the link and download the QR code as PNG or SVG.

The audience scans the QR code, opens the link or taps Join at the top of slam-voting.com and enters the code. When no question is open, the page waits and shows the next one by itself. The language follows the phone, DE | EN at the top right switches it.

Present

Click Present. The presentation opens in a new tab, ideally on the computer for the projector:

  1. First comes the slide for joining with QR code, address and code.
  2. The right arrow key, the space bar or Next shows the first question. It opens, the audience answers, and the result grows live.
  3. Each further question closes the previous one. Back or the left arrow key opens the previous question again. A quiz or an audience vote does not open a second time; it appears as it was last shown, for example with the answer revealed.

More keys: E shows or hides the result, F switches full screen on and off. Code and address appear small at the edge of every slide, so people can still join later. The button at the top right switches between light and dark.

For a second screen without controls there is the results view. It always shows the same slide as the presentation.

You can also start, close and show the result directly on the page of the poll, for each question.

Release words and texts

For word cloud and free text, entries only appear on the screen once you release them: click Release (n) on the question. If you do not want this, switch off Show words and texts only after release on the page of the poll (owners, admins and editors). New entries then appear right away, and waiting ones are released when you switch it off. A block list keeps crude insults out in both cases, and with Entries you hide single ones.

Polls in a competition

You can add a poll to a competition: on the Live polls page of the competition, Add a poll copies its questions. The audience then uses the code of the competition, and the results stay separate for each evening. More under Live polls.

Your own look

With supporter access, the presentation and the results view use the colors, font and logo of your team's display design.

How many answers

Without supporter access, each question accepts up to 100 answers; with supporter access there is no limit. Only the answer, the time and a check value from a random marker of the phone are stored. Single answers are deleted after 30 days; the result stays until the poll is deleted.
